From the Desk of Sheldon Goldberg: 16 years ago today, I presented the very first New England Championship Wrestling event in Wethersfield, CT at a now-defunct arcade called The Fun Zone.
The idea behind NECW was a simple one - local pro wrestling featuring largely local talent as the stars. Give up and coming hopefuls the chance to carry the ball and perform as the featured talent. Add in talent from outside the area - even outside the county - to give the shows a bigger presence and to give the fans something different. Oddly enough, when I started this that was a radical idea. Sometimes it worked like crazy. Sometimes not so much. But after hundreds of shows, thousands of individual matches and hundred of talented people, some of whom have gone on to become big stars in wrestling, I'm still here doing the same thing. I never had major capital behind it. I didn't have a rich family or a trust fund. I just worked like everyone else and did the best I could with what little I had.
Before wrestling, I was a frustrated broadcaster who worked in professional theater. I did publicity for Broadway shows on tour. I created and produced plays and even invented what Broadway calls "the Jukebox musical." Those experiences and others helped me immeasurably with NECW.
I could write so much more and believe me there is plenty to say. But for now, thank you to all who have shared this remarkable experience with me and to the many friends this business has brought me. Now to get back to promoting Saturday's show and planning more...
