It seemed like the NJPW G1 Climax USA Special lived up to it's name. It was special. It certainly drew very well as the show was sold out. I'd venture to bet if they wanted to try their hand at a larger venue, they could have easily sold that out as well. The show had a BIG time feel. I was one of the few that attended the first New Japan Show in California back in 2004 and the Hollywood Athletic Club for the Toukon 2 Event, that was headlined by Bryan Danielson challenging then IWGP World Jr. Heavyweight Champion HEAT. Interestingly enough, the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship wasn't defended this weekend. Also as a side note, Rocky Romero was the only competitor who was at the Toukon 2 Event and both nights of the G1 Glimax USA Special.
The set up, I'm sure looked fantastic on television. For the live audience, well, it left a lot to be desired. I'm not the shortest dude, but I had trouble even watching the show. It wasn't stadium type seating, so at times the action was invisible from where I was standing. A large contingent of fans ended up standing by the walls, just easier to see the action. The Meet and Greet was handled well, but the lines for Merchandise sales were insane. Those were really my only two complaints.
The show itself was awesome. As a fan of the National Wrestling Alliance it was cool to see guys like Raymond Rowe and Chase Owens. Owens didn't actually wrestle which I was kind of bummed about, but glad to see these guys getting the big time treatment. It was also very cool to see the Legend Juyshin Thunder Liger live. I got to shake his hand a take a pic with him.
The Wrestling again was first class. If you haven't seen this show, do not hesitate to find it on the NJPW World website.
