Last year saw the rise of Omega and his matches with Okada were ahead of alot of what was going on during the year. Dominion I've felt is New Japans 2nd best event of the year even though they have a smaller crowd, usually the matchesare up there with any of the other bigger New Japan shows except obviously WK. Although a case could be made
for Sakura Genesis or Invasion Attack but I digress.
So I think what makes Dominion stand out though is the history or rather what has occurred since 2015. It was the year the Okada defeated AJ Styles to become IWGP Champion and in which would be AJ's last title reign before he headed back to the states after his match with Nakamura at the following years WK. The following year Naito who was hot as the IWGP Champion (regardless of his short reign) along with Los Ingobernables De Japon probably came in a bit over confident ended up losing to Okada which also marked what would be the start of the longest
IWGP reign ever that since winning the title, there has yet to be a challenger to dethrone his remarkable reign.
To say Okada has had one of the best title reigns in years is an understatement. Every challenger has felt the Rainmakers wrath as he go through the best New Japan has to offer to show why he was the right choice to help carry and make New Japan along with it's talent one if not the best promotion in the world, maybe not the biggest but the best overall product with helps with their ties to ROH and CMLL but you know throughout his reign, there has been one challenger to step up and opposes probably the biggest threat to Okadas reign. You already
know where I'm going with this with Omega for as great as he has become has yet to win the biggest prize in New Japan. It was great to see that he became the first ever IWGP US Champion along with the high profile Jerico match to the inevitable reunion with Ibushi to become the Golden Lovers who maybe the best tag team that until recently not many outside of Japan and those that watch anything related to Japan knew how great the two were. Then there's the fallout with some of the BC even losing at ROH's biggest show
of the year to Cody which also in turn could have broken up the Elite altogether.
Now with Dominion looming, Omega has been given one last chance to show why he is the uncrowned champion with their having a win each which is another reason why Dominion stands out. Just last year the two went to a 60 min time limit. Some say it was better than there meeting at WK11 but IMO I think that particular match was special do the where it was held at and the fact it was the first time the two had met but also I think there match at NJPW's biggest tourney was better, maybe because I liked how
fast paced it was but that's me. I don't care about all that star rating bs.
After Okada successfully defened his title against the one time ace Tanahashi he called out Omega and challenged him putting up his IWGP title
but this time he wanted a no time limits in which Omega accepted with a condition to make it 2 out of 3 falls. The main event is now set.
What I'd like to see happen is for Omega to win and when Ibushi comes out to congratulate him, have Omega turn and set up a feud with them which would culminate in a match between the two at a later date for the IWGP championship. The reason I say this is cause not that long ago while Omega said in an interview that one of the main reasons he didn't go to WWE is because him
and Ibushi have unfinished business"If we aren’t together, there’s no point. I want us to change the world together. I took belts with Bullet Club, did a lot, but that was all the job. Golden Lovers transcends wrestling. This is real life. As long as there was a chance for this to happen, I wasn’t going to say goodbye to NJPW.” Of course now the Golden Lovers are tagging again, besides what was said here, Omega has stated over the years that he considers Ibushi the best but hasn't been given the opportunities he deserves. I solely believe Omega would love to put over Ibushi in a big way and I couldn't think of one better than what I mentioned but that's just me.
Although the main event is set, this could be looked at as actually a double main event since Jericho is making his return to face the and only Naito who has really come into his own since leading one of the best factions and has had some great matches. What's interesting about this is that not long ago Jericho had been working fans and even sites online stating he wasn't coming back to New Japan and it seemed this was the case when he madea surprise appearance at WWE's GRR but like Jericho he proves why he always one step ahead.
What makes this also probably stand out above last years Dominion is thatnot only are do we have two main events but we also have a returning Mysterio who has been
making waves of his own lately, is he going to WWE, is he not? The only thing that isn't for sure I'm writing this is just who his opponent is. Maybe since Ospreay doesn't have an opponent?
This would make sense since Ospreay challenged Ospreay at the recent Strong Style Evolved.
Not the first time the two met but it will be for New Japan if it happens. If I'm not mistaken this will b
be Mysterios first match with the company?
Not only do we have what's been mentioned but even the undercard is looking great with the Bucks going for their first ever IWGP Tag titles since declaring themselves as heavyweights.
Here's the card so far but I'm sure there be a few more matches added which takes place on June 9, 2018.
Hirooki Goto (C) vs. Michael Elgin vs. Taichi (NEVER Openweight Championship)
Rey Mysterio vs. ??
Will Ospreay (C) vs. ?? (IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship)
Los Ingobernables De Japon (SANADA & EVIL) (C) vs. Young Bucks (IWGP Tag Team Championship)
Chris Jericho vs. Tetsuya Naito (C) (IWGP Intercontinental Championship)
Kazuchika Okada (C) vs. Kenny Omega (IWGP Heavyweight Championship No Time Limit 2/3 Falls Match)
for Sakura Genesis or Invasion Attack but I digress.
