I have been watching Dark Side of the Ring on Vice TV with great interest. Several of the episodes resurrected memories - - some of which were pleasant, others that were not.
Given that my long-time friend Jim Cornette was one of the commentators enhanced the credibility of the show. The two Producers seem to have left no stones unturned and offered-up a balanced perspective.
I will not go into detail on the episode titled "The Life and Crimes of New Jack." I worked with him in several promotions and rarely have I come to detest a worker as I did New Jack. He was vicious, rotten and had no ability to discern right from wrong. I once-had a heated discussion with former NWA President Howard Brody when Howard brought Jack to one of our Florida cards.
The episode I viewed last evening focused on The Fabulous Moolah. When I was in my late teens and in the U.S. Air Force stationed in San Angelo, TX (where I reffed my first match for Don "Lawman" Slatton) I dated former lady wrestler Evelyn Stevens. She was several years older than me; but that didn't matter. I was transferred overseas and that ended the budding romance. The year was 1968.
Evelyn told me things about how she got started. She went into great detail about Moolah. It was not pleasant. Since it was told to me in confidence, I won't divulge specifics.
Before her death, I frequently corresponded with former NWA Champ Ann Casey. Ann had no use for Moolah. To Ann, Moolah's name was an obscenity. I also occasionally exchanged perspectives with Vicki Otis ("Princess Victoria"). I consider Vicki to be a woman of courage and integrity. Moolah attempted to manipulate Vicki (and others) to enter into sexual situations. Vicki would have none of it. She was - and remains - a lady of honor.
Moolah and Mae Young were booked on a few Dennis Corralluzzo NWA New Jersey cards in the twilight of their years. Both were consummate workers who never gave up the business. That I respected.
I close by restating my recommendation that you tune in and watch Dark Side of the Ring. It is one-of-a-kind.
