Mr. Marquez hooked me as an NWA fan with the production skills Fred is talking about. I of course knew the NWA of old but he'd do a show on YouTube from the New Japan dojo and would keep the fans updated on the Californian NWA stuff. I remember weekly you'd see guys like Bobby Jo Marshall, Mikey Nicholls (Who just signed to WWE), Rocky Romero and a very young Fergal Devitt was on a few episodes as NWA British Commonwealth Champion. I remember an episode featuring Chris Harris wrestling against Australia's own Bobby Jo Marshall.
Anyway, that was my thing for awhile. I'd watch those (Even though they were outdated by the time I found them online) and started following the NWA more and more after that. Marquez was a great host but I never had known he produced that stuff as well.
Also, the NWA Australia tour recap videos were done in such a way that I as a 16 year old kid promised myself that if they ever did another tour that I'd make the plane trip to wherever it was and watch it. That was another Marquez project.

Been talking with some people just recently about this and laughing and remembering the past. I have either spoken directly with or exchanged emails, instant messaged, or whatever, many NWA promoters. Here is a small sample list.
Dennis Coralluzzo Marc Coralluzzo Denny McLain Ernie Todd Kevin Rhodes Howard Brody Greg Price J. D. Costello Ken Taylor Joe Price Rick O'Brien Bill Behrens Jim Miller Richard Arpin
Plus others who are active on this board and more. I stand by post. The point of which, "what worked so well", barely functioned at all at times. Like when President Arpin announced out of nowhere that Jim Miller had left the NWA, much to Miller's and the BOD's surprise.
I support the brand, not a person or group of people.

Well the Brand has gone to shit since Bruce took over.

Why would you talk to so many promoters? Why do you care so much?

Why would you talk to so many promoters? Why do you care so much? Kinda like how I was friends with Damian Wayne, Dave Marquez and Adam PEarce on facebook. I've become good friends with the Dynamite Kid's baby brother too. I am a fan so I like to keep in touch with these people from time to time. DKM likes to go to shows and has become friends with some promoters.

Polejump,
As die-hard fans we tend to engage the people around us. There was a time that I was on a first name basis with many of the promoters of the NWA. I have spoken to Fred over the phone more than once. I have spoke to Bob Trobich over the phone more than once. I consider David Marquez a friend. And have exchanged messages and emails with many of those in the NWA today or recently. I've always championed the brand, much like DKM. I also believe that the brand right now is at an all time low. But these change fast and furiously.
I will say that between researching what I was writing and doing my podcast, I developed a laundry list of friends who either are workers, trainers, promoters, referees, or somehow associated with wrestling and I truly value those relationships. I don't get the inside scoop anymore, but if I get a phone call from one of my friends I've made through wrestling, I take it. There are a lot of bad in wrestling... but I like to think I've developed a lot of good relationships with good people.

But Jay, for you, I understand it because you run a fan site and a podcast so of course there are times you'd fact check or invite someone for an interview.
I'll never understand why fans try and develop relationships with people in the business and then name drop them (Like DKM just did) in an attempt to come off as cool and knowledgeable. Dave Marquez has more of an idea of what happened behind the NWA when he was there then DKM will know ever.

Obviously you don't like to learn, DKM started building a relationship with promoters to pick their brain, to learn, to get involved and see how he can lend a hand so to speak. I'll never understand why you can't understand that.

Maybe he likes to be friends with promoters so he can get insider info? He is trying to buy the forum....

This is why it's hard to trust DKM when he cites "sources". I think at best the information DKM has (If he does have it) would be third or fourth hand information. Very much a "My friends, uncles, best friends wife said this about the NWA" then name drop them (Like DKM just did) in an attempt to come off as cool and knowledgeable Yeah right.

I reached out to a lot them, a few reached out to me after I joined this site.
I had wanted to promote earlier in my life.
Mainly, I just wanted to say "Thank you and I love the product."

Everyone who is a fan of something, would like an inside view. It's a normal reaction....nothing wrong with it. But, as I have cautioned Deven many times....it could ruin it for you too. I had a very good friend who was a long time broadcaster for an NBA team. He would bring me to practice, the press room, etc. He would tell me EVERYTHING....and I soon learned to hate the NBA and don't watch it to this day as a result. The best thing to do when you are a fan, is to be a fan. If not, you will get sucked in to the vortex of wrestling politics and bullshit. And when you see the underbelly, it's not nearly as attractive or fun. It's kind of like going to a wrestling show and not being a "smart mark". Just enjoy the show and you will have a lot more fun.

I had a similar conversation last night with someone. I noted always buy my tickets, I pay for my concessions, I pay for my merchandise. Kevin Douglas gave me a free picture once I believe. The only thing I have ever "gotten" was when I was offered the chance to buy the Jr belt I own and an invite to a dinner with the Von Erich boys and Tenzan and some other wrestlers were at.

Very true...and we have had the same conversation.....I think we talked about it over dinner last time I was in Dallas. What you do have though is access....and inevitably, you will learn things that are probably better off not knowing. Thats really my only point. I liken it to being a fan of a certain player. For instance...I was a huge "Pistol" Pete Maravich fan as a kid. It would have been the equivalent of me meeting Pete only to find out he was a jerk (not saying he was, just an example). In that case, it would have been better for the kid/fan to just like the player and never have to know the negative.
