Who was the first person who knew to be the "World Champion?" Doesn't matter what fed.
For me it was Ric Flair. We got cable three months after he won the title.

I started watching right about the time Iron Sheik beat Bob Backlund for the WWF title, but really got hooked when Hogan won it.
So, Iron Sheik, I guess...

Good Question, I've been watching wrestling since I was 3 (my dad took me to a NWA Hollywood show at the old San Diego Coliseum in 1976) BUT my first World Champ I would notice has to be Iron Shiek, Nick Bockwinkle or Hulk Hogan in early 80s? Till then I remember HATING Roddy Piper. I told him that when I met him and Adam Pearce at SD Comic Con. It gets hazy when I think back to then cause I remember WWF being part of the NWA cause the The Brisco Bros(I think to think that they were NWA TAG Champs at the time but I can't 100% remember) being a WWF show challenging the WWF Tag Champs.

Hulk Hogan around WM2... didn't think he could beat Bundy... We didn't know any other wrestling in the Northeast until TBS appeared on our cable systems.

I vaguely remember my Dad, who isn't much of a fan and had I not gotten so into it he'd have probably never watched much, watching the match were Steamboat defeated Flair. I can't really say that is my first recognized champion though because I don't think I really even watched that for more than a minute or two. The first champion I really remember well is Randy Savage. I remember the Saturday Nights Main Event match with Ahkeem and the Boss Man and I must have watched Mania 5 at least 100 times. I rented that damn thing every weekend! I loved Savage as the underdog. I still really like the Demos vs Colossal Connection match too.

Hogan for sure. We were a WWE family for a long time. But when we finally did get hooked into the NWA/WCW my mom absolutely hated Ric Flair and the Horsemen. Dad didn't care much, he was always about the guys like George the Animal Steel. I'll never forget my mom screaming at the Television when the Horsemen jumped Lex Luger and kept the belt on Flair. Mom says, we're never getting one of those damn pay per views again... they always cheat. But guess what, we'd always get the next ppv.

LOL, My mom told me a story about the time while she was dating my dad a couple of years before I was born. My dad took her to see wrestling and she lost her voice screaming at Classy Freddie Blassy cause he was cheating so much. My Godson's Grandfather got so pissed at the Iron Shiek that he rushed the ring. He got grabbed by security before he could get into the ring. He got 86'd from the arena.

Ahhh...the days of REAL heat. The older ladys were always the most passionate fans to me here in STL. Momma was on 4'9"" tall but had a pen knife out waiting for Crusher Blackwell to walk back from the ring she hated him so much..lol. Glad I saw it before she saw him. Many years later I informed her of his passing. Her response.. " Good..I hope he burns in hell"
As for my first world champion.. Terry Funk
