Hello guys.
Not NWA related so much but I'm posting this in the NWA section because it's most active, I'm most known in this section and effectively I'm looking to do something similar to the NWA territories of old and am looking for advice and ideas from all of you because as I've always said, I'm always open to listening to ideas and learning from people.
So yes, old mate Polejump is opening up his own professional wrestling company. No April Fools joke and no troll. You all might recall me taking interest in the promoting side of things earlier this year asking about how to get paid shows, talking about the way certain talents may be used and whilst this was all asked as genuine questions to the forum there were ulterior motives in which I was trying to work out a business model and a way to effectively run an independent wrestling company that might lose money at the start but eventually turn profit.
Now, I assume some will laugh (DKM, DW, G_Mellos, Shawn) but without doing the ol' humble brag I do have many media connections in my city, I do hold formal education in media production (Mainly audio but also some video) and have legitimate film writing credits, I have worked at 3/4 radio stations in my town, my girlfriend is friends with the local newspaper journalist and I have connections to a few decent buildings that are willing to support professional wrestling. These buildings have agreed to put posters up in their building, put the shows on their website to advertise, use their social media pull and even sell tickets. All of this was negotiated and arranged by me and in all honesty it was quite easy to negotiate this.
Now, I'm no fool. I have mentioned in the past I used to help with ring crew when I was younger at the local matches and through that I've met a few wrestlers. I picked a friend of mine who is a popular veteran wrestler (Started in 1994 actually, he's 52 years old) who is helping arrange the talent and believes in this project so much that he's willing to wrestle and move my ring around for free.
So, the product, I write this in a train station before heading over to my job and my laptop is on 12% battery but pretty much I was inspired to start this in November 2016 or around that point. Any of you guys remember Bert Prentice's Ozark Mountain Wrestling? I was watching this company in a dead period of wrestling doing territory style wrestling and was inspired by it. As a creative person who gets inspired by a lot of things I sat on the idea for a month and that motivation didn't go away. My idea is to do traditional style wrestling that people can be proud of supporting. We won't have a top heel humping a mannequin inside of a coffin instead we're going to have big guys who can fight coming to the building looking for a brawl. I do not care about having 2 guys out there and doing just moves, I care about telling stories and getting people emotionally invested in characters just like I did in film.
The inevitable question, am I using names? No. Although due to veteran wrestlers connections we have a small Japanese company and a number of Japanese wrestlers wanting to make dates for us. As it stands we have 7 wrestlers on board, I would consider 4-5 to be the top professional wrestlers in "old school" style in the state. My laptop is about to die so amongst laughter of my peers I open the floor up to you all, do you have questions, comments, advice? I am all ears and would love to hear from all of you (No sarcasm at all)
Note: I am not some pie in the sky promoter who believes I am going to pull 400 first show. We're actually budgeting for a crowd between 75-100 people for show 1.
Also, Mr. Wood, Mr. Varlese, Mr. Brooklyn, Mr. Fred, Mr. Marquez or any other promoters I would love ANY advice from you all. I've received a lot of advice from my friend and some of the talent we've approached but I haven't really talked to many promoters (Although I have studied well known successful promoters historically and listened to them do interviews etc. Nothing beats active advice)
