Impact Wrestling has had what seems like a long turbulent and tumultuous history even though they have only been around less than 20 years, it seems alot longer than that given the problems they have endured which I don't want to get into because that would be like writing an entire book but there was LOLTNA from Taimapedia which dives into the chaotic history from its inception to 2016 but has since been deactivated but can be read from the archive site.
Even though it's has its vast majority problems I still stuck with watching them, hoping something would come good of it but sadly it led to a number of stars jumping to the bigger promotion or the other. Still they had a core group of talent that are still entertaining but just as when it seemed things were going to turn around for the better, it just seems like they pulled a TNA and did something that flashes back to senseless booking. Maybe I'm being a little harsh or even a bit cynical but I just do not understand the logic behind what has occurred in the past week?
I consider myself to be a big wrestling fan. Without going into a long history, I remember days going to the Capital Center down here before they tore the place down and seeing Hogan in his prime who like alot of children looked up to but being that young I was very impressionable. That is before I got older and found out what he was really about. I think nothing was more upsetting then finding out your heroes are nothing more than illusions. Since then I've watched like most fans companies fall and rise and even stay stagnated but while some companies change for the better, some just don't but I'm not completely ignorant or atleast not as much I think I am to know that every company has it's flaws.
I can go on about the companies I do not care for but it wouldn't do any good because I do work for any of them nor do I intend to so all I can do is question their decision making.
For those that still watch Impact or has recently know that last week something occurred which didn't make much sense.
Yeah so with the Patron debacle last year, I was pretty excited with E L I Drake won the title. I've felt if given the chance, he could be a very good champion but for whatever reason just wasn't given the opportunity until it arose without any real knowledge it was going to happen, now I may sound bias because he is from MD but I think what did it for me when I knew he should be or rather could be world champion of the company was around the time things seem to be looking good for them. It was when the Broken universe was around with Decay and Drake was doing the whole Facts Of Life segments but for me it takes time for certain people to grow on me but it doesn't happen that much but even I can be oblivious to certain talent be given any kind of praise especially if I haven't been watching whomever
for a number of years. I knew Drake was good but below is a few of the main segments that had me telling myself "this guy could be a future
world champion".
This one is my one of my favorites.
Now I cannot speak for anyone else but that's just me so you can understand or try to about my delight when I saw him win the title at the gauntlet for gold.
Impact like a few other companies seem to be affiliating themselves along with other promotions which to me helps everyone involved. One of the things I was enjoying during Drakes reign was that he had been traveling and defending the title in these other promotions. I don't recall it being really defended outside the company since TNA was aligned with New Japan which is a whole other story I may get into later on...or not.
So Drake had been defending during the month of January against Patron and Mundo/Impact and had came out on top each time with the match at Border City getting thrown out, a 3 way was set up for the title in a cage which during the finish Drake outsmarted Johnny Impact and came out on top controversially but nevertheless the stipulation was neither would get another chance at the Drakes world title again.
Last week marked one of the many changes Impact has gone through and they went back to using a four sided ring instead of the 6 sided which was still cool. I think it's easier for the talents to do their thing even though the 6 was pretty cool too. Anyways so Chris Adonis planned something special for Drake but was interrupted to a returning Aries who challenged Drake for the world title and you already know that outcome but to me just had me scratching my head. To me Drake was doing a fine job at taking the title to as many places as he was able to, giving it some meaning and then Aries comes back and wins it in what was almost like a squash match? I didn't
understand and I don't. I mean sure Patron and Johnny aren't allowed to go for the title anymore but they still could have handled it a better way and build a nice feud up.
Don't get me wrong I like Aries. I have since his ROH days. A time he had an hour and half match with Danielson and of course beating Samoe Joe for the title. He was nice when I met him but I just don't know what happened? The only conclusion I have came up with is that some how or some way, I do not know the full extent of wrestling contracts for companies but I have a pretty good idea that if you are good at negotiating then you can get more than you were at other places with a certain guarantee put in place.
I'm trying to be as optimistic about this as much as I can but to me it seems like Aries had some sort of guarantee that if he came back to Impact that he would be given the world title which I have no problem with but the problem lies on how it was obtained and I am not quite sure what the real intention was in making Aries the world champion but I guess I'll just see if it leads to another reign for Drake later on or maybe even Johnny's first one? I read somewhere that this was suppose to be another "new era" for Impact but so far it looks like something of an old tale.
See the thing is that I want companies to suceed because it's good for the wrestling business in general and it helps those that are within to have a place to go but its alittle baffling as to why they do things like this?
