Hello guys.
I've been keeping up to date with my local independent wrestling companies in my state because I'm kind of obligated to now. I keep up with the lowest of the low companies that perform in front of 60 family/friends and I keep up with the biggest companies in my state that consistently pull 300-400 effortlessly (Or so it feels)
So many things I can talk about but I'm going to talk about the hotshot booking that has been running rampant around here. Just scrolling my Facebook and I've discovered Ultimo Dragon is coming here for two dates in May which is really freaking cool to the point that I may even attend just to get a photo with Ultimo Dragon but that's not my point.
Check this out and tell me if it's not overkill, talent that has appeared or will appear in one state in 2018:
January: None
February: Juventud Guerrera, Great Mitzu (Japan) all of NJPW, Will Ospreay did some indies whilst here also.
March: Austin Aries, Brian Cage, Briscoe Brothers, Joey Ryan, Marty Scurll and The Young Bucks
April: Jimmy Havoc, Pete Dunne, Toni Storm and whoever else PROGRESS wrestling brings plus Ryback.
May: Ultimo Dragon
June: Hurricane Helms plus 2 more international talents TBA
July: Billy Gunn, Joey Mercury, Mick Foley, Pentagon Jr, Super Crazy, Tenille Tayla (WWE's Emma), The Spirit Squad, Willie Mack
---
So in a 7 month period that is 23+ "name" talents and all of New Japan that have wrestled on our soil and WWE has just announced they're doing a huge stadium show here also. Great news for Australian fans that love international wrestling but I have two issues with this and I'd like the viewpoint of the board on whether my issues are valid or not.
Issue 1: With 23 name talents not only do you burn the audience out on seeing them and kill it being special but you burn out who you can bring in future. Anyone on the list above can't really be brought out a second time because the audience has already seen them so it splits the audience. It also hurts the local competitors because a show without an international might be looked down on and scoffed at. Thankfully I'm out of the wacky Sydney market and don't have to compete with anyone on that list but Ryback but it's still a cause for concern.
Issue 2: These names being brought in (Apart from the international tours) are being brought in for absolutely no reason. Gone are the days of Ultimo Dragon coming to town because a mouthy junior needs a touch up from a legend. The appearance of Emma who allegedly costs TWO THOUSAND dollars a match isn't being built up to, there isn't a woman that has torn through all the top Australian women and finally is taking on the best from Australia it's just "Hey, here's Ultimo Dragon and two months later you can have Emma just because"
I love watching old school wrestling and seeing guys come in for a reason or being built up to. A top heel team are beating down the top baby face so he brings in Andre The Giant to help even the odds, a heel manager makes vague promises for weeks/months about a mystery man he's bringing and it turns out to be Abdullah The Butcher who tears through the territory and eventually puts over the top face. THAT is wrestling but just having someone for the hell of it? Nah...
Also, where the hell do these guys get the money? Ultimo Dragon will be performing in a 150 seat church hall as will Emma. Emma will be about $4000.00 and Ultimo Dragon would be about $3000.00. Even with tickets at $40.00 each after tax, paying the rest of your card, advertising etc there can't be a lot left over.
End rant, please share your views.
