Since there is a lull and some topics that seem to have run dry I'm always interested in missed opportunities or what could have been. Anyone got a good "What Could Have Been" event, matchup, or rivalry? Let's try to keep this a thread not complaining about how things actually turned out, but rather what could have been if something had changed. I got 2 examples for the same scenerio:
One example. Bryan Danielson pulls out of "Reclaiming the Glory" tourney finals and instead Adam Pearce fills in for him and beats Brent Albright for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Imagine if Danielson doesn't have that eye injury. He probably wins the belt and spends the next several years competing against Pearce and Albright. I think those matches would have been amazing.
Second example. Drew Onyx was the NWA North American Champion, Chance Prophet was the NWA National Champion and Damien Wayne was way over at the time and a challenger for both titles. Imagine what could have been if those 3 had even been invited to be in the tournament. We could have had a Prophet vs Onyx Champion vs Champion matchup. Then imagine Onyxx wins that match and faces Wayne. It could have set into the works a series of matches with the 3 of them. I just remember how exciting the board was back on the old site and all 3 guys were entertaining as he'll and posting challenge videos on YouTube and I could easily see how well over those matches could have been. Also it would have kept Drew around the mix longer. He was one of my favorite guys to watch back then.
Anyways, what you think guys, got any what could have been ideas?

Fun topic... how about, what could have been if Shane Douglas had accepted "the torch" and had a run as NWA World Champ. The moment did much to shape the changing landscape for NWA and ECW at the time and we know the effect the ECW mold had on the next generation. Could have went a different way. I think Shane would have been a great champion and was a good choice (until the swerve). He was never going to be Flair, but could have gave a good run. What if.....?

I recently watched a “behind the titantron” YouTube video on Gino Hernandez’ death. It reminded me of his incredible run in WCCW and his all too brief run in GCW, both of which I was able to watch on tv (back when there were excellent choices for wrestling entertainment available regularly). I would add to this “what could have been” discussion the incredible missed opportunity of Gino Hernandez as part of the 4 Horseman in the NWA. As much as I enjoyed Barry Winham’s run with that group, I believe a Horseman incarnation with Flair, Arn, Tully, and Gino would have been phenomenal.
As a second consideration, I think another great “what could have been” is the missed opportunity of Al Perez carrying the NWA World Title with Gary Hart as his manager. I think Perez was pure gold back in the day. Clearly main event talent, both in WCCW and GCW/WCW. Very disappointing when he disappeared from the promotion.

You say Hi no Hernandez and it makes me think what could have been had Magnum T A not been in his car accident. Sky was the limit, he had everything going for him and it's such a shame he had all the tools to be able to rise all the way to the top. We all remember his epic challenge for Ric Flairs World Championship. Anyways, Gino Hernandez and his drug abuse, was such a shame.

I agree wholeheartedly about Magnum TA’s potential and his status as probably the most prominent example of “what could‘ve been”. He was an incredible talent. Gino, and Al Perez, seem to have been somewhat lost in many longtime wrestling fan’s memories- nowhere near as much conversation about them in comparison to References to Magnum’s lost potential. Both Gino and Magnum’s stories are sad and including the eventual retirement of Perez, all 3 are a loss to wrestling as a whole. Kind of makes you melancholy thinking about them.

What could have been for the NWA if Corgan had been successful in acquiring Impact?

What could have been for the NWA if Corgan had been successful in acquiring Impact? Could have been a disaster. You know it's public record that they have been losing money for about a decade. Why would the NWA want an albatross like that?

DW should have won the belt. That's Tharpe mistake.
Nwa Mexico had potential, maybe a partnership with Cmll instead of a lawsuit. Now every promotion has lucha stars in 2019.
We never got a weekly news type show and I always thought that was strange. Show the previous weekend highlights for each event. Lucha+ tv on YouTube has a show like that and its amazing. Corgan is sort of doing that now in his own way.
I guess it's all about timing.

Why would the NWA want an albatross like that? I realize this is an older discussion but I just came back to some of the latter comments this morning i don’t disagree with the statement of how bad TNA had been managed financially for years but it was a known brand, historically established as the face of the “current at the time” NWA. That relationship soured because of multiple personalities and multiple reasons between those entities. Corgan owning both brands (this is assuming he would’ve still purchased the NWA after successfully acquiring TNA) would have eliminated those stresses and we might well be referring to the show as NWA Impact right now. i think Magnus would still have wound up with the strap, but how many other things would be different? Would the 10 lbs of Gold YouTube series been “must watch “ tv on SpikeTV (now Paramount Network)? What talent would have stayed and who may have come in to a revamped, well run TNA? i believe Corgan has shown to be a better businessman in regards to wrestling than TNA’s former management (Dixie could spend money but not make it), so I believe he would’ve instituted the necessary changes to right the ship...and the show would probably still be on Paramount/Spike and would have avoided the Pop channel years...
