Just got the 10Lbs of Gold dvd and noticed that the NWA champions list on the inside cover has several well known but officially unrecognized reigns. Included as champs are the controversial Carpentier reign, Kowalski,Veneno, etc. Historically speaking, they held the 10 lbs but now listed as champs in a NWA released dvd, does it make them official?

Your guess is as good as ours. Years ago these footnotes were included in some histories. Recently, the New Zealand switch with Race and Flair was disputed by fans but not the NWA. In the end, it’s what the NWA recognizes and not fans as WPC owns it and makes that decision. I don’t know that WPC has put out an official lineage of what the current NWA recognizes.

I would rather the pre-alliance champions were recognised like they were in JCP. In the JCP/WCW days it was never talked about the NWA dating back to 1948 and Orville Brown it was always 1905 and Frank Gotch. That’s why Lou Thesz was always called a 6 time champion. When Thesz collected Brown’s alliance belt it was Thesz’s lineage that was always recognised. Recognising people like the Midnight Rider doesn’t achieve anything. Stuff like that would also make Flair about a 26 time NWA champion

I don't think they are official as much as acknowledged.
