(Note: Created a new thread because I didn't want to ask this in the Parade thread which is show discussion. If Jay wants to move this there that is totally cool)
The NWA IHWE Promotion have a show coming up which we all know about and it's a big one. They've got four former WWE superstars on the billing (Charlie Haas, Rodney Mack, Lance Hoyt and Rob Conway) along with a supporting cast that features Chase Owens who is a member of the Bullet Club, ROH's Veda Scott and Ray Rowe, Jim Cornette and a couple of local legends. They've also got almost every single NWA Champion which I assume means at least one or two fly-ins unless all the champions are finally based in Texas.
Regardless, I've looked at the Ridglea Theater and it looks to seat about 300-400 people maximum. With the talent on the card and running the show for such a small audience I do have to question how they'll make money off of it.
Right off the bat you have to assume renting the Theater itself is at least a few hundred dollars, all the insurance stuff for both the workers and public is probably another 600-700 on top (I'm going off Australian prices so someone please feel free to correct if this is way off)
With this in mind you're already at a thousand bucks before booking anyone. You then have Haas and Mack who are regulars for NWA IHWE so lets assume they're cheap and are 300 a pop. Hoyt is a big deal so lets say he's 500 and we know for a fact Conway is 300 as well. Cornette rarely makes independent appearances so likely at least another 500 there and then you've got Owens who is probably 150+ at this point in his career, Rowe who is probably 150-200 and Scott who is probably around the same as Owens. Off your marquee talent alone that's 2100-2200 dollars and at this point you're at over 3 grand. You then have the local talent who I'll assume works cheap but you've got the NWA Champions as well and I assume there are at least a couple fly-ins there as well so we're probably at 4000 in expense for the talent. This isn't even taking into account the local legends who are appearing (I'm assuming they're doing it for fun and to be involved in WrestleMania weekend but who knows?)
So at 4000 dollars in expense and general tickets selling for 10 bucks we're looking at about 300 tickets sold (If ringside sells out) to break even. This isn't counting the advertising, the merchandise being produced or anything else. To me, this seems unlikely considering the NWA Supershow a couple years back that featured four former WWE superstars (Masters, Conway, Hoyt and Davey Jr) and NJPW talent (I believe it was Liger, Kojima, Tenzan and that young boy). That show drew about 300-400 with a lot bigger names than what the NWA-IHWE promotion is offering.
Also, with WrestleMania weekend occurring you'd assume they'd be competing with WWE and every other indy in town for the money on offer. It's not a bad show for a tenner but I'd assume there are several promotions in town offering a bigger show for that same tenner.
I'd like to mention I'm not singling out the NWA event either. Tons of promoters here in Australia fly out a big name American talent (Flights are 1000 dollars at the cheapest) and pay them huge money (Usually double the American fee for an international booking) and they've got a "name" working in front of a hundred people. I've always wondered how they re-gather their money and if they don't I have to question what the point is doing it time and time again.
Anyway, back to the parade, what's the deal here? Is this promotion going into this looking for exposure from the WWE audience? Are they looking to try make money off the DVD sales? Is the guy in charge just happy to lose his ass to get the NWA name out there?
