Dusty Rhodes won his third and last NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
He ended Flair's 3rd and longest title reign at 2 years 2 months and 2 days. It was also the first time "Big Gold" changed hands.
His reign would only last 14 days before dropping the title back to Flair.

I didn't grow up with Dusty, but when you watch his promos and how he changed his style over the years, that dude was legend. Anyone in wrestling today match the charisma of Dusty Rhodes?

Dusty accepted the realities of his body. He was picture perfect for grunt-and-groan 'rasslin; which prevailed when he entered the business. His assertive willingness to get color and use his physical bulk in blood-and-guts, barroom brawling was his stock-in-trade.
What impressed me the most was his mastery of promos. From his somewhat-feigned southern drawl to his inflection - "if you weeel" - he was one of the best - - ranking up there with Buddy Rogers, Freddie Blassie, Flair, et al.
Dusty was the working man's hero. "The Plumber's Son" gimmick was a stroke of genius. Even his brief stint as The Midnight Rider got over with the crowd.
I got to know him, albeit superficially, through Howard Brody while Howard was writing Dusty's biography. And that book is a must-read if you are a true Dusty Rhodes aficionado.
His legacy is eternal. No Hall of Fame can chronicle or do adequate justice to what this man contributed to professional wrestling.

I wish I had known about the National Wrestling Alliance back when I was younger. growing up purely a WWWF/WWF fan as that was the only promotion we had OTA in my neck of the woods. While I grew up a Hulkamaniac and not knowing of the Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flairs, Terry Funks etc...... But looking back and seeing those promos and in ring battles is nothing but the best. How Vince Sr/Jr never picked up Dusty in his earlier days (I remember seeing the MSG bout he had under WWF prior to polka dot era). The guy was pure charisma, pure talent, and could go with the best of the best!
